It's 11:40 p.m. and Priya has just finished unpacking in her new officetel in Mapo. The convenience store is closed for restocking, and she's hungry.
Her Korean coworker said "just Baemin it." She downloads the app, sees a wall of Korean, types her address in English, and the order fails at checkout.
Start with Baemin (배달의민족): since February 2026 it works in English, and it accepts cards issued abroad, Alipay+, WeChat Pay and Apple Pay with foreign cards. Enter your address in Korean, add a short note for the rider, and you can eat in about the time it takes to shower. Coupang Eats and Yogiyo are worth adding once you have a Korean phone number and a Korean debit card.
The three apps compared
| Baemin (배달의민족) | Coupang Eats (쿠팡이츠) | Yogiyo (요기요) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | Yes, AI-translated menus and checkout | Limited; check the app | Korean only, as far as we found |
| Sign-up | Korean number or foreign registration number; overseas-number SMS ordering reported | Coupang account with Korean phone verification | Korean phone number |
| Foreign cards | Yes, plus Alipay+, WeChat Pay, Apple Pay (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex) | Unreliable; Korean card or bank account is safest | Korean card is safest |
| Good for | Your first order, widest choice | Free delivery promos, Coupang WOW members | Comparing prices, coupons |
Baemin is the market leader, so it usually has the most restaurants near you. Its English mode covers searching, choosing a restaurant and menu, paying and tracking the delivery. The translation is done by AI, so a few dish names come out odd. Menu photos with Korean text are not translated.
Baemin's language setting pops up when you open the app after the update. If you missed it, look for the language option in the app's settings.
Signing up: with or without a Korean number
Without a Korean number: Baemin is your option. Woowa Brothers, which runs Baemin, said in August 2026 that foreigners can place orders without signing up by verifying with a text message to an overseas phone number. This was announced around a tourist campaign in Seoul, so the flow may change; if it doesn’t appear for you, you’ll need a Korean number.
With a Korean number in your own name: you can sign up for all three. Each app checks you through identity verification (본인인증): you choose your carrier, select foreigner (외국인), and enter your name and foreign registration number exactly as on your residence card. If that fails, the problem is almost always your phone line, not the app. See why sign-ups fail.
The phone line is in your employer's name, or the carrier still has your passport number from before your ARC arrived.
Visit your carrier with your ARC and passport and ask them to update your ID details. Then retry. Our phone plan guide covers getting a line in your name.
Paying: foreign card vs Korean card
| Method | Baemin | Coupang Eats / Yogiyo |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex | Yes, including through Apple Pay since June 2, 2026 | Hit or miss |
| Alipay+, WeChat Pay | Yes | Not confirmed |
| Korean debit card (체크카드) | Yes | Yes |
| KakaoPay, Naver Pay, Toss Pay | Yes, if linked to a Korean account or card | Varies; check the checkout screen |
Once you have a Korean bank account, link your Korean debit card or set up KakaoPay or Toss Pay. Korean cards rarely fail, and some coupons only work with Korean payment methods.
If a foreign card is declined, the usual causes are your bank blocking overseas online payments or a security check (3D Secure) that the app can’t complete. Turn on international online payments in your bank’s app, then try a different card network.
Entering your address in Korean
This is the step that trips people up. Riders read Korean, and the app’s address search works best in Korean.
- Find your road-name address (도로명주소) on your lease, your ARC address record or a parcel delivered to you. You can also search your building on Naver Map and copy the Korean address.
- Search it in the app and pick the right building.
- In the detail field, add your building and unit: for example 101동 1203호 (building 101, unit 1203), or just 502호 for a single building.
- Add the entrance code if your building has one. Many riders can’t get in without it.
Address: 서울특별시 마포구 OO로 12
Detail: 502호 (공동현관 비밀번호 1234#)
That last part means "building front door code 1234#." Riders see it with your order.
Notes to the rider and the restaurant
Every order has two request boxes: one for the store (가게 요청사항) and one for the rider (배달 요청사항). Some apps show a few preset options to tap. Useful phrases:
| You want | Type this |
|---|---|
| Leave it at the door | 문 앞에 두고 가 주세요 |
| Don’t ring the bell | 벨 누르지 말아 주세요 |
| Text me when you arrive | 도착하면 문자 주세요 |
| No disposable cutlery | 수저, 포크 안 주셔도 돼요 |
| Not spicy, please | 안 맵게 해 주세요 |
| Less spicy | 덜 맵게 해 주세요 |
Leaving at the door (문 앞에 두고) is completely normal in Korea, and you usually get a notification when the food arrives. Many apps also have a checkbox to skip disposable cutlery.
Delivery fees and minimum orders
Two numbers sit at the top of each restaurant page:
- Minimum order (최소주문금액): the smallest total the restaurant will deliver. Set by each store.
- Delivery fee (배달팁): set by the store and app, and often higher for longer distances.
Both vary by restaurant and change often, and the apps keep running free delivery offers. Coupang Eats gives free delivery to Coupang WOW members, and in mid-2026 it extended free delivery to all members for a limited time. Baemin runs its own membership, Baemin Club (배민클럽), with free delivery on eligible orders. Check the final price on the checkout screen before you pay; that’s the number that counts.
Eating alone: 1인분 and single-portion menus
Korean delivery used to be built for groups, but single-portion food is now easy to find:
- Search 1인분 (one portion) or look for a “1인분” filter or category.
- Baemin’s 한그릇 (one bowl) section lets you order a single dish with no minimum order. It’s available in some areas only.
- Dosirak (도시락, lunch boxes), gimbap, rice bowls (덮밥) and tteokbokki shops usually have low minimums.
Late at night
Korea’s late-night delivery culture is real. Fried chicken, jokbal (족발, braised pork trotters), bossam, tteokbokki, pizza and noodle shops often take orders well past midnight in cities, and some run until early morning. The apps only show restaurants that are open and deliver to you right now, so what you see is what you can order. After about 2 a.m. the list gets short outside busy areas; convenience stores (편의점) are the fallback.
Allergies and dietary needs
Delivery menus rarely list allergens in English, and the AI translation won’t catch everything. Write it plainly in the store request box:
- 땅콩 알레르기가 있어요. 땅콩 빼 주세요. I have a peanut allergy. Please leave out peanuts.
- 새우 알레르기가 있어요. I have a shrimp allergy.
- 고기 빼 주세요. No meat, please.
For a severe allergy, a note is not a guarantee. Shared fryers and sauces are common, and small shops may not read requests during a rush. Call the store before ordering (the number is on the restaurant page), or ask a Korean-speaking friend to call. You can also photograph the menu with Papago to check ingredients.
If the order is wrong or missing
- Take photos of what arrived, including the receipt sticker on the bag.
- Report it in the app: order history (주문내역), then the help or customer center (고객센터) option on that order. In-app chat is the fastest route. Baemin’s English mode helps here; on other apps, Papago can translate your message.
- Say what you want: a refund (환불), a partial refund, or a re-delivery (재배달).
- If the app marks it “delivered” but nothing came, check the door and the lobby, then report it right away.
Refund decisions are made case by case, so report quickly while the photos are fresh.
Common questions
Can I pay cash on delivery?
Some restaurants allow paying the rider directly (만나서 결제), but it depends on the store and the app, and Coupang Eats generally requires paying in the app. Plan to pay by card.
Do I tip the rider?
No. The delivery fee (배달팁) shown in the app is the only extra charge. Tipping riders in cash is not expected.
Can I order to a hotel, office or park?
Yes. Use the exact address and add the room number, floor or a landmark in the detail field. Han River parks, for example, have designated delivery zones where riders hand over orders.
Why do I see fewer restaurants than my Korean friend?
Restaurants deliver only within their own radius, so you see different stores from a few blocks away. Make sure your saved address is your current one.
