Mei ordered a mattress topper, dish soap and a phone charger at 10 p.m. on a Tuesday. At 6:40 the next morning, the box was outside her door in Daejeon.
The week before, she had spent a whole Saturday hunting for the same things at a big-box store, and carried them home on the bus.
Coupang (쿠팡) is Korea’s biggest online store, and most of what you need for a new home arrives the next day with Rocket Delivery (로켓배송). Foreign residents can sign up with a Korean phone number, switch the app to English, and pay with a Korean card or a foreign Visa, Mastercard or JCB card in their own name.
What Coupang is
Think of it as Korea’s Amazon: groceries, household goods, electronics, clothes and baby supplies, mostly shipped from Coupang’s own warehouses and delivered by its own drivers. Items with the rocket logo are the fast ones. The same membership also covers Coupang Eats (food delivery) and Coupang Play (streaming).
Delivery types
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| 로켓배송 (Rocket Delivery) | Coupang’s own stock. Order by midnight for next-day delivery, in most areas |
| 새벽배송 (Dawn delivery) | Order late at night, delivered early the next morning in covered areas |
| 로켓프레시 (Rocket Fresh) | Groceries and chilled food, for WOW members |
| 판매자로켓 (Seller Rocket) | Sold by a partner seller but delivered at Rocket speed |
| 로켓직구 (Rocket Jikgu) | Shipped from overseas; takes several days and goes through customs |
| Plain listings | Third-party sellers, usually 2 to 3 days, their own shipping fees |
Cut-off times and coverage depend on your address and the item; the app shows the expected arrival time before you pay.
WOW membership: is it worth it?
WOW (와우 멤버십) costs ₩7,890 a month as of October 2026 (unchanged since the 2024 increase). It includes free Rocket shipping on any amount, Rocket Fresh, free returns on Rocket items within 30 days, free delivery on Coupang Eats, and Coupang Play.
Without WOW, Rocket items ship free once your order passes a minimum. As of 2026 that’s ₩19,800, counted after coupons and discounts. Below it, you pay shipping.
If you order twice a month and each order is around ₩12,000, you'd pay shipping twice without WOW. Add one return or a few Coupang Eats orders and the ₩7,890 usually pays for itself. If you only shop once a month and always go over ₩19,800, skip it.
New members are often offered a free trial. Cancel in the WOW membership section of My Coupang before it ends if you don’t want to be charged.
Signing up as a foreigner
- Download the app and sign up with your email, a password, your name and your Korean phone number. You’ll get a text code.
- Use your name exactly as on your residence card (외국인등록증) and phone contract. Card registration checks that names match.
- Switch to English: My Coupang → language setting. Since 2025, product search, product pages, orders, checkout and membership screens are available in English. Sign-up screens and many seller descriptions may still be in Korean.
Some steps, such as registering a card in Coupay or buying age-restricted items, ask for identity verification (본인인증) through your phone carrier. It fails when the phone line isn’t in your name or the carrier still has your passport number. Our guide to why Korean sign-ups fail explains the fixes.
Paying: foreign vs Korean cards
Coupang’s own FAQ (July 2026) says:
- Foreign-issued cards: only Visa, Mastercard and JCB can be registered, up to 3 of them.
- Korean cards: up to 10, and debit cards (체크카드) and bank accounts work too.
- Name match: the card must be in the same name as your Coupang account. Family cards only work if issued in your name.
- 3D Secure: if your foreign card’s 3DS check fails at checkout, register the card in Coupay first (My Coupang → Payment methods → Accounts·Cards → Register).
In practice some foreign banks block Korean merchants or fail the 3DS step. If your home card keeps failing, a Korean debit card from your Korean bank account is the most reliable option.
Coupay (쿠페이)
Coupay is Coupang’s built-in wallet. You link a card or a Korean bank account once and pay with a PIN or fingerprint. Linking a bank account needs a Korean account in your name and a quick verification.
Coupang's customer center is 1577-7011. After the late-2025 data leak that exposed names, phone numbers and addresses from about 33.7 million accounts (Coupang said card details and passwords were not included), be extra wary of texts or calls "from Coupang" asking for codes or payments.
Entering your address
Delivery runs smoothest with your Korean road-name address (도로명주소) in Korean.
- Use the address search (주소 검색), type your building’s road name or the apartment name, and pick from the list.
- Add your unit number in the detail field, such as 101동 1203호 (building 101, unit 1203).
- Add a delivery note (배송 요청사항): leave at the door (문 앞), security office (경비실), or a building entrance code (공동현관 비밀번호).
- Your name can be in English; the address should be in Korean.
Copy your address straight from your lease or utility bill to avoid typos. The same address works for our food delivery guide.
Returns
- Go to My Coupang → Orders → Return or exchange (반품/교환 신청).
- Pick a reason. Change of mind (단순 변심) is fine within the return window, but non-WOW members usually pay the return shipping.
- Leave the box at your door on the pickup date. A Coupang driver collects it; you don’t go to a post office.
- Refunds go back to the original payment method after the item is checked.
WOW members get free returns on Rocket items within 30 days. Opened or used items, removed tags and some categories (food, hygiene items) can be refused, so read the item’s return notes.
Throwing away the box and tags on day one, then deciding the size is wrong.
Keep packaging for a few days on clothes, shoes and electronics, and request the return in the app before taping it up.
Rocket Jikgu and your customs ID (개인통관고유부호)
Overseas Rocket Jikgu items clear Korean customs in your name, so checkout asks for a personal customs clearance code (개인통관고유부호), a code starting with P that the Korea Customs Service issues instead of using your ARC number.
- Get it free on the Korea Customs Service UNI-PASS site or the Mobile Customs (모바일관세청) app. Foreigners use their foreign registration number.
- New in 2026: codes now expire. Codes issued from 2026 are valid for one year from issue; older codes expire on your birthday in 2027. Renew on the same site.
- The name on the code, your Coupang account and the recipient name should match, or the parcel can be held at customs.
You’ll use the same code for AliExpress, Temu and other overseas shopping.
Common questions
Can I use Coupang without an ARC?
Many people sign up with just a Korean phone number and pay with a foreign card. Steps that need carrier identity verification, and Korean bank linking, generally need a line registered with your ARC number.
Is there an English version?
Yes. Coupang added English in 2025; switch it in My Coupang. Seller-written product details and some sign-up screens stay in Korean, so use Papago’s camera for those. See our Papago tips.
Can I pay cash on delivery?
No. Pay by card, Coupay or bank transfer when you order.
What if nobody is home?
Rocket drivers leave parcels at your door, a locker or the security office, and send a photo when delivered. Add a note if your building needs an entrance code.
